REVEX first at Heathrow
Heathrow Airport’s taxiway concrete is generally accepted to be among the hardest in Europe. With its flint and river gravel mix and aggregate up to 65mm, the age-hardened concrete represents a challenge to any diamond saw bladeboth in terms of cutting rate and life.

In support of Amec, as part of BAA’s Pavement & Infrastructure Team, Concrete
Cutters (Sarum) Ltd. recently cut 1350 linear metres of Taxiway Alpha’s PQ concrete to 450mm depth. Using 72h.p., 4 cylinder diesel floor saws Concrete Cutters carried out comprehensive tests using diamond blades from four different suppliers including Nimbus. Comments the company’s operations director Iain Campbell, “the new REVEX blades clearly became first choice since life averaged at least 15% more thantheotherblades. They also tended to cut faster or at least
equal to the best of the rest.” Concrete Cutters used four saws cutting simultaneously, with two 5,000-gallon water tankers each feeding two saws.

Step-cutting commenced with two saws performing the initial cut using 600mm diameter blades, followed by a third machine tooled with a 750mm blade. The final cut was taken with a fourth machine using a 900mm /1200mm diameter
blade. As Iain Campbell sums up, “We started a week ahead of break-out, worked 7a.m. to 6.30p.m. daily shifts and stayed on programme throughout the job”

Increasing speed on the M3
In recent trials a new version of the Nimbus ULTIMAX thin wall diamond crown drill has shown itself nearly 70% faster than some other drills. The trials took place during the Highways Agency’s scheme on the M3’s Lightwater interchange bridge at Junction 3 where structural upgrading has taken place in line with the current European standard.

To facilitate barrier/parapet replacement Farnborough based contractor Castle & Pryor has drilled close on a thousand holes using a combination of rock and
diamond drilling. This latest ULTIMAX version has been developed using new diamond grit/bond technology to provide faster drilling especially where steel is
involved. In the event the M3 project demonstrated, on a trial basis, that the
new Nimbus product can significantly reduce drilling time and ease the problem
of penetrating steel. As Nimbus area sales manager Danny Palmer observes,
“Using the 20mm diameter ULTIMAX trial drill Castle & Pryor achieved
penetration rates of up to 9cm/min through the heavily reinforced flint concrete involved.” In general rebars needed to be avoided where possible for reasons of structural integrity but on hitting steel the drilling contractors reported that
they found no need to ease back on drilling pressure.

In addition to performance enhancement the new ULTIMAX reflects the safety culture for which its parent organization Saint- Gobain Abrasives is now well known. All Saint- Gobain plants are oSa certificated which means that 100% of its production complies 100% with the international standards laid down.

Diamatic joins the Nimbus range
May this year saw the beginning of an important new alliance for Nimbus Diamond Products. As sole UK distributors for the Dutch floor preparation system Diamatic, Nimbus will be able to offer a full range of machines to cover floor grinding and polishing requirements across the board.

As Nimbus national sales manager Peter Worsley explains, “With the versatility of the Diamatic range behind us we will provide a cost-effective answer for every application from a simple ‘ironing out of bumps’ to a multi-stage, top quality decorative floor.” The company behind the patented Diamatic technology,
Holland Industriele Diamantwerken, is a leading name in floor preparation systems and specialises in the design, development and manufacture of state-of-the-art planetary-driven machines. As sole UK agent Nimbus becomes part of
Diamatic’s worldwide distribution network.
